There are few places in this world that have become as iconic as Venice. The city has become so popular that there are recreations of it all other cities around the world (Las Vegas, Macau, EPCOT Center). The place does seem to hold some sort of magic. I'm not sure if it is the winding narrow streets or the canals, but the place transports you back to another time (until you turn the corner and find a McDonalds and a Disney Store...sigh). I prefer to pretend that the Starbucks isn't there. I just block it out of memory and remember the good, nondescript pieces of Venice where you become lost in another world.
